New data on Ukraine
In the first four months of 2026, the number of dead and wounded among the civilian population of Ukraine turned out to be higher than in the same period of any of the past three years. This was reported today by the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in this country. According to the mission’s report, at least 238 civilians were killed in April alone, and another 1,404 were injured. This is the highest monthly figure since July 2025. Since the beginning of 2026, 815 deaths and 4,174 injuries among the civilian population of Ukraine have already been confirmed. In May, according to the mission, the number of casualties remains high.
Drone attacks in Lebanon
United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) representatives expressed concern over the increased activity of drones and explosions in the immediate vicinity of peacekeepers’ positions in the south of the country. On May 11 and 12, several drone explosions occurred near the UNIFIL headquarters and on its territory, presumably belonging to Hezbollah. According to the mission, such incidents threaten the safety of UN personnel and further destabilize the situation in the region. Clashes between Israel and Hezbollah fighters continue despite the ceasefire agreement that came into force on April 17.
Hunger in Syria
The World Food Programme (WFP) was forced to halve the scale of emergency assistance in Syria due to a severe funding shortfall, resulting in millions of the country’s residents facing a growing threat of hunger. The UN warns that this occurs at a particularly dangerous moment. According to WFP data, 7.2 million people in Syria still face acute food insecurity, with 1.6 million of them in a particularly critical situation. WFP requires 189 million dollars over the next six months to maintain and renew its relief operations in the country.
Situation in the Strait of Hormuz
Ongoingblockade of ships in the Strait of Hormuz areacreates a threat to the safety of sailors, global trade, and the global economy. At the same time, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has a plan to create corridors for the safe evacuation of crews, but it has not been possible to implement it due to the lack of agreement among the interested countries. This was stated on Wednesday by IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, speaking at the opening of the 111th session of the Maritime Safety Committee. According to him, the longer the current situation lasts, the higher the risk of a serious incident.
