Minsk, May 13 /Xin Hua/ — The second International Legal Forum of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), “International Legal Dialogue in the CIS: Traditions of Cooperation and Response to the Challenges of the Times,” opened on Wednesday in the capital of Belarus. The event, dedicated to the 35th anniversary of the CIS, took place at the organization’s headquarters. Corresponding information was published by the press service of the CIS Executive Committee on the same day.
As noted during the opening of the forum by the first deputy secretary general of the CIS, Igor Petrishenko, the 35-year history of the organization is a significant milestone in the development of legal construction. In various spheres of the Commonwealth, 562 interstate and intergovernmental agreements are in force.
He also stated that in the modern world the authority of international law is under serious threat. There are increasing statements about a crisis in the international legal system, and the actions of individual players trying to impose their values on the rest of the world ultimately lead to open and gross violations of previously inviolable norms and principles, added I. Petrishenko.
“At the level of legal doctrine within universal international organizations, attempts are being made to substitute international law with so-called ‘international rules’, and dispute resolution mechanisms with unilateral sanctions. These challenges require a professional and principled response, the development and implementation of joint effective solutions,” noted I. Petrishenko.
Moreover, he reminded that throughout its entire history, the CIS has consistently upheld an indelible line of respect for rights, preserving the legal legacy of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.
Within the framework of the forum, a plenary session and meetings of thematic sections were held, at which a wide range of issues concerning modern international legal policy of states was discussed. About 70 delegates from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan participated in the event. –0–
