The people of Ukraine have already endured more than 1500 days of war, Sabine Freizer Gunesh, a representative of the “UN Women” structure on the territory of Ukraine, reminded journalists gathered at a briefing in Geneva on Tuesday. She noted that the war is becoming “increasingly deadly for women and girls.”

Between January and March 2026, about 199 women and girls were killed — more than in the same period in 2025, 2024, and 2023, according to data from the United Nations Monitoring Mission on Human Rights in Ukraine (UN MMHR).

“We have already observed a significant increase in the number of female victims – by 27 percent – in 2025 compared to 2024,” said a representative of “UN Women,” speaking via video link.

She also reported on the preliminary results of a study conducted by the organization, according to which attacks on energy facilities have made life much harder for women across the country – especially for those who have to care for their loved ones in conditions of absence of electricity and lack of resources.

Sabine Freizer Günesh noted that despite difficult circumstances, women continue to provide public transportation work, conduct lessons in bomb shelters, care for elderly relatives, engage in demining territories, repair energy systems, and support their families.

A representative of the “UN Women” structure spoke about one such woman – Tatyana Moruzhenko from Donetsk region, whom she met last month. Tatyana leads a team of 27 energy workers who repair damaged facilities after attacks to ensure light and heat in houses, hospitals, and schools. Tatyana and her team, consisting of men, work around the clock.

Sabine Freizer Gunes emphasized that women and girls throughout Ukraine need support.

“The ‘UN Women’ structure continues to operate throughout Ukraine, providing services on protection, humanitarian aid, as well as consultations on legislation, policy, and budgeting issues to ensure the consideration of women’s needs,” he said.

“We are also working to ensure that women participate in the political process and decision-making about the future of Ukraine, since at the moment they remain largely on the sidelines, and lasting peace cannot be achieved if women are excluded from the negotiations,” added the representative of “UN Women.”
