Tashkent, May 12 /Xin Hua/ — The recent May holidays confirmed a stable and high interest of Chinese tourists in Uzbekistan, turning tourist demand into a real driver of qualitative transformation of the national service sector. This was stated in an interview with Xin Hua by the Deputy Head of the International Relations Department of the Committee for Tourism of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Feruz Dodiev.
Niche directions for in-depth tourism, presented by the countries of Central Asia, during the recent May holidays became the priority choice for travelers seeking a unique cultural experience. According to the Fliggy platform data, the volume of bookings for tourist products to countries such as Uzbekistan increased by more than 100 percent year-on-year.
According to F. Dodiev, the guest flow from the PRC recorded at the beginning of May demonstrated a shift of emphasis from traditional shopping tourism to a model based on cultural consumption and immersiveness. Chinese travelers began to pay priority attention to cultural heritage sites, historical monuments, and the study of traditional crafts, which contributes to the long-term and sustainable development of the country’s tourist infrastructure.
As the representative of the Uzbekistan Tourism Committee explained, taking into account the request from Chinese guests in the country, a phased introduction of digital solutions is being implemented. In particular, payment system terminals WeChat Pay are already operating in the Samarkand tourist center “Great Silk Road” and the Samarkand international airport, allowing payment for hotel and other services using QR codes. This trend is accompanied by a significant increase in demand for individual route planning and online services at all stages of travel.
F. Dodiev emphasized that the influx of tourists from China directly stimulates the development of the hotel business, catering, transport, and retail trade in Uzbekistan. He pointed out the growth of employment in the tourism sector and the adaptation of services to the preferences of Chinese guests — from menu adjustments to increasing service speed.
In a broader context, the recovery and activity of the Chinese consumer market in sectors such as outbound tourism are becoming a critically important factor for stimulating not only the local but also the global economy.
F. Dodiev noted that the spending of Chinese tourists contributes to the increase of cash flow in the local economy, the activation of small and medium-sized businesses, and the creation of new jobs. Thus, the return of Chinese travelers acts as a powerful catalyst for global demand, confirming China’s status as one of the leading drivers of world economic growth.
