Every year, the country conducts systematic work on the improvement of memorial complexes, military burial grounds, alleys of glory, and memorial sites. Since 2019, within the framework of the federal project “Formation of a Comfortable Urban Environment,” which, since 2025, operates as part of the national project “Infrastructure for Life,” more than 1,400 objects have been renovated. This was reported by the Deputy Chairman of the Government, Marat Khusnullin.
The improvement of memorials and military burial sites allows to immortalize the memory of the outstanding feats of the participants of the Great Patriotic War, to educate youth by the example of courage and patriotism, to preserve the continuity of generations. This is the foundation for the further development of the country and careful attitude towards one’s own history. Work on improving memorial sites is carried out on a permanent basis. As of today, since 2019, more than 1.4 thousand such territories have been brought into order. It is important that the residents themselves are actively involved in the formation of a comfortable urban environment – through the nationwide voting for improvement projects, which this year will be extended until June 12,” said Marat Khusnullin.
Monuments, steles, and obelisks are integrated into the modern urban environment, combining state symbolism, architectural styles, design, and art, and become part of the common visual code of the country, reflecting the cultural and historical heritage of Russia, its unique identity, past and present.
One of the completed projects is a complex in the settlement of Tuchkovo of the Ruza municipal district of the Moscow region. Here, on the territory of Alley of Glory, near the pond and in front of the center of culture and arts, convenient pedestrian paths, energy-efficient lighting, benches, green areas, as well as a stage for concerts, a children’s play complex, a sports ground with exercise machines and a skate park have appeared. Memorial slabs have been updated, stands with information about events and personalities related to the history of the Ruza district have been installed.
In Nyagan, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug, the Alley of Russian Glory was completed, connecting the memorials “Eternal Glory to the Heroes of the Fatherland” and those who died in the local conflict. The project united a memorial zone with the central square of the microdistrict, where art objects “Fountain”, “Clock”, LED arches, bike paths, and even a ring for newlyweds appeared. Every year, the “Sidewalk” festival, the military-patriotic contest “Defenders’ Race”, concerts, and exhibitions are held here. The neighboring gymnasium gained the opportunity to acquaint students directly during walks with the stories of the country’s heroes.
In the Republic of Crimea, at the entrance to the city of Saki, the Devyat Geroyev (Nine Heroes) square has been improved. Here, the “Warrior-Liberator” monument and a stele symbolizing the feat of nine scouts who in April 1944 held back many times superior enemy forces of saboteurs have been installed. In 2024, on the 80th anniversary of the city’s liberation, a memorial plaque with the names of all nine Heroes of the Soviet Union was opened here.
In Kashira near Moscow in 2020, thanks to the victory in the All-Russian competition of the best projects for creating a comfortable urban environment, a square named after the test pilot, Hero of the Soviet Union Sergey Morgunov was transformed. He completed over 200 combat sorties and shot down 22 enemy aircraft. Here, the paths have been renewed, small architectural forms installed, a children’s playground, outdoor lighting, and video surveillance. Today, this place is a favorite recreational area for city residents and a platform for patriotic events.
The federal project “Formation of a Comfortable Urban Environment” as part of the national project “Infrastructure for Life” continues to change the appearance of Russian cities and settlements. Since 2019, more than 80.6 thousand public spaces have been renovated, and 1159 projects have been implemented – winners of the All-Russian competition for the best projects for small towns and historical settlements, among which there are many significant memorial objects, history embodying the feats of defenders of cities, warriors, builders, doctors, teachers, workers.Monuments, memorials, steles — these are spaces that form an emotional connection between a person and their homeland. Thanks to the federal project “Formation of a Comfortable Urban Environment,” we not only restore obelisks and alleys of glory but also create a modern infrastructure around them: lighting, recreation zones, comfortable benches. This makes memorial places accessible to all categories of citizens and integrates them into the city’s overall landscape,” noted the Minister of Construction and Housing and Communal Services, Irek Faizullin.
