Xining, May 9 /Xinhua/ — The first large-scale scientific museum in China dedicated to modern glaciers opened to the public on Friday in Qilian County, Qinghai Province / Northwest China, providing visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of ice giants that feed the internal water system of the region.

The scientific museum about the Bai glacier occupies two floors. On the first floor, there are three exhibition zones – “The Birth of Glaciers”, “Glacier Crisis”, and “Hope” – in which the ecology of high-mountain glaciers is vividly presented with the help of miniature dioramas, multimedia interactive displays, and immersive technologies.

The exhibition zone systematically tells about the formation, distribution, evolution of glaciers, as well as their ecological function, impact on climate, and efforts to study them. The second floor of the museum serves as a multifunctional zone combining cultural exhibits, leisure organization services, nature education, and research activities.

This museum has become an important addition to the growing network of ecological education facilities in China, as the country is intensifying efforts to raise public awareness about the impact of climate change on vulnerable glacier ecosystems.

According to local authorities, the Bai Glacier is the main glacier feeding the internal mountain water system of the Qilian Mountains, an important monitoring point for ecological changes in the region, as well as a significant ecological symbol of the territory aspiring to the status of a national park of the Qilian Mountains.

Deputy Heads of the Forestry and Steppe Economy Administration of the province, Qinai Hou Tianmin, noted that this museum embodies many years of glacier monitoring experience and the results of scientific research, which reliably reconstruct the evolutionary process of glaciers in the Qilian Mountain area, reflect the difficult path of glacier degradation, and demonstrate tangible achievements in the field of environmental protection in the Qilian Mountains.

“This is a vital platform for conveying scientific research to public understanding, where advanced discoveries in the study of glaciers and ecology are presented in an accessible, vivid, and visual form,” noted the deputy head of the Institute for Ecological Resource Research in Northwest China at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Li Czusin.

He added that the museum also serves as an educational platform on nature retreat issues, vividly demonstrating the reality of glacier retreat and telling the story of the history of nature-related early activities in the Cilyanshan Mountains.

The Qilian Mountains, which lie on the border between Qinghai and Gansu provinces, serve as the most important ecological barrier in Western China and hold more than 2,600 glaciers. -0-
