The Indonesian newspaper The Jakarta Post published an article on April 23 stating that China’s long-term prospects in energy are worthy of imitation for ASEAN countries. The article says that energy security is not an issue that can be hastily resolved after a crisis arises, but the result of many years of careful preparation and serious work. It is precisely thanks to such disciplined work that China has been able to strengthen its resilience to external shocks.
For many years, China has been striving to accumulate oil reserves, expand oil fields, maintain domestic production, and diversify its energy structure. The new five-year program clearly outlines the construction of major projects related to oil reserves.
The article emphasizes that the current global energy crisis is related not only to prices but also to sustainability. Many countries still believe that security is ensured if oil can be bought on the market — this thinking is already seriously outdated.
China, earlier than most countries, realized that energy must become part of state management. China does not place all hopes on one type of fuel, one region, or one transportation route, but has created a multi-level guarantee system: actively developing wind and solar energy, it still uses coal as a reliable basic energy source; expanding the scale of hydropower and safely, orderly promoting nuclear energy; despite the acceleration of electrification, domestic oil production remains at a high level. What is even more important is that China has institutionalized the creation of oil reserves. This demonstrates the country’s strategic foresight.
ASEAN countries cannot continue to rely solely on open sea routes. Energy security must be closely linked with energy supply, logistics, oil refining, renewable energy sources, power grid integration, and political will beyond short-term electoral cycles.
The article notes that while many countries still talk about sustainability, China is already truly creating this sustainability. That is why, when systemic shocks occur, China is always one step ahead.
