Main news at the UN and worldwide: two million residents of Somalia are on the brink of hunger, the WMO confirmed more than 3,000 strikes on Ukraine’s healthcare facilities, global food prices have been rising for the third consecutive month, the UN observes Days of Remembrance and Reconciliation dedicated to those who died in World War II.

Hunger in Somalia

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced a sharp deterioration of the situation in Somalia. The crisis is rapidly worsening. According to UN estimates, nearly six million people – about one third of the country’s population – are living in conditions of acute food insecurity. Two million of them are on the brink of starvation. About two million children in the country are undernourished. The UN warns that if urgent measures are not taken, the situation could escalate into a large-scale humanitarian crisis.

Strikes on Ukraine’s healthcare facilities

Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the healthcare system of Ukraine has been subjected to repeated strikes. During this period, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed more than 3,000 incidents. The attacks affected every link in Ukraine’s healthcare system: from primary medical and sanitary aid centers and maternity hospitals to ambulance brigades and pharmaceutical warehouses. Most of all, inpatient facilities suffered: about 80 percent of the strikes fell on polyclinics, hospitals, and other medical institutions.

Food prices

Global food prices have been rising for the third consecutive month, driven by high energy costs and ongoing supply disruptions related to the conflict in the Middle East. This is reported in the latest report of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The FAO Food Price Index in April was 1.6 percent higher than the revised March figure and two percent higher than the level of last year.

Days of Remembrance and Reconciliation

May 8 and 9 are observed at the UN as Days of Remembrance and Reconciliation, dedicated to those who died in the Second World War. UN Deputy Secretary Farhan Haq emphasized at a briefing in New York the importance of “preserving the memory, reconciliation, and international cooperation to prevent future conflicts.” The UN reminds that the end of the Second World War created the conditions for the establishment of the United Nations, an organization intended to spare future generations from the calamities of war.
