Moscow, May 8 /Xin Hua/ — Russia agreed to the initiative of US President Donald Trump on a ceasefire with Ukraine from May 9 to 11 and the exchange of prisoners with Kyiv in this period in a “thousand for a thousand” format. This was announced on Friday by the assistant to the head of the Russian state Yuri Ushakov.
“By the instruction of the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, I confirm the acceptability for the Russian side of the initiative proposed just now by U.S. President Donald Trump concerning a ceasefire for the exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine,” said R. Ushakov to journalists.
“The main thing is that it is stipulated to carry out, during the truce period from May 9 to 11 inclusive, the exchange of prisoners involving about a thousand people from each side,” said Yu. Ushakov.
“An agreement on this account was reached during our telephone contacts with the administration of the President of the USA,” he indicated. “The representatives of the USA, in turn, got in touch with Kyiv.”
According to him, the agreement “is based on the development of a recent telephone conversation between the presidents of Russia and the USA, in which the leaders specifically emphasized that our countries were allies during the years of the Second World War, and they also discussed the possibility of a ceasefire during the Victory Day celebrations.” –0–
