Rio de Janeiro, May 8 /Xin Hua/ — A homemade bomb exploded on Friday at a public school in the city of Belford Roxo in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro, injuring at least 10 students. Local authorities reported this.
According to the city mayor Mariana Malt, the device detonated after one of the students found it on the school grounds and threw it into the air.
The educational institution stated that the situation is under control, and the injured students aged 13 to 15 were discharged from the local hospital after receiving the necessary medical care.
According to reports from local TV channels, the homemade bomb was filled with sand, as well as nails, nuts, and bolts, which scattered upon the explosion.
Police officers conducted a thorough search at the school and did not find any explosive substances.
A representative of the education authorities of the state of Rio de Janeiro noted that the authorities are conducting a joint investigation into the circumstances of how the explosive device ended up on the premises of the educational institution. –0–
