This year, the May Day celebrations in China once again took place amid unprecedented activity: people and transportation moved in endless streams throughout the country. Through a series of dynamic figures and lively scenes, the image of an energetic “China on the move” was clearly manifested, becoming visual evidence of the strong momentum of the country’s socio-economic development and the high activity of consumer demand among the population.

Transportation is an important support of the holiday economy, as well as a key element in ensuring consumer turnover. According to data published by the Ministry of Transport, during the May Day holiday period this year, the expected volume of interregional passenger trips will reach 1.52 billion people-trips, or an average of 304 million per day, which is 4% more compared to the same period last year.

In conditions of a sharp increase in passenger traffic, the relevant departments have adopted a set of measures to ensure the uninterrupted and orderly operation of the road network. This not only satisfied the population’s demand for travel but also stimulated the development of roadside businesses — catering, hotels, sales of local goods. Thus, the “last mile” was laid to a new stage of consumption growth.

During the week of cultural and tourist consumption, dedicated to the May 1 holiday, seasonal cultural and tourist products and events were launched across the country: nature walks, family entertainment, educational tours. A total of about 13.7 thousand events were held, and more than 284 million yuan in subsidies and coupons were allocated to support consumer demand. This expanded the opportunities for residents and tourists for cultural leisure and rest during the holidays.

In addition, the China Tourism Attractions Association initiated the holding of the “Festive Consumption Season” in tourist zones. Within the framework of this initiative, during the May Day holidays, about 200 events were organized nationwide jointly with attractions. The Chinese Performing Arts Association launched key festive events and discounts under the “Travel with Performances” program.

On the eve of May Day, the State Migration Service forecasted a peak in passenger flow through the country’s border checkpoints during the May Day holidays this year: on average, 2.25 million border crossings are expected per day, and the maximum daily border crossing volume will exceed 2.4 million people. Cross-border tourism continues to gain momentum, becoming a new growth point for the holiday economy and stimulating consumption.

Holidays are an important window for observing the viability of a country and the well-being of its population. The May Day holidays of 2026 presented a vivid picture of safety, order, active demand and supply, as well as vibrant energy. Peering into this window, we see not only growing numbers and flows of people, but also a stable, dynamic China.
