Washington, April 2 /Sin Hua/ — US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has asked the Chief of Staff of the Special Operations Forces, General Randy George, to leave his post and immediately resign. Several media outlets reported this on Thursday.

D. George, who is the highest-ranking general in the US Army, is being removed from his position against the backdrop of the American-Israeli war against Iran, while no immediate explanations for this decision are given.

According to a CBS News report, P. Hegseth made it clear that this position should be filled by a person who will embody the vision of the army shared by President Donald Trump and P. Hegseth himself.

“We are grateful to him for his service, but it is time for a change in leadership in the army,” said a senior Pentagon official.

The usual term of office for the chief of the General Staff of the US Armed Forces is four years. R. George was nominated for this position by former President Joseph Biden and confirmed by the Senate in 2023, which means he is supposed to hold this position until 2027.

The current deputy chief of staff, General Christopher Laniw, who was previously the military aide to P. Hexset, will become the acting chief of staff of the Allied Forces Headquarters, CBS News reports.
