The All-Russian final of the Student Hockey League Championship began for our hockey players with a match against HC “DVGUPS”. The first game of the tournament is always the most difficult, especially since the Politechnic team had four new players who needed to integrate into the team and understand the coach’s tactics. The match started with a conceded goal, but by halftime the team was leading in the score, and after the break continued to increase their advantage, not leaving any chances to the opponent. In the end, the Polytechnicians won with a score of 13:4.
The next day, a match was played against the team “Sarvuz.” The “Black Bears” had already settled all questions about the winner in the first period, with a confident 5:1. By the end of the match, the spectators saw a total of 11 pucks behind the Saratov goalkeeper. The final score of the game was a crushing 16:2, and the second victory was added to the Bears’ tally. In this match, the best player was recognized as Ivan Oreshkin, who scored a debut hat-trick for our team.
Expectations for the third match were at their highest, as this time Politekh faced a team competing in the CXHL — the MGTU team from Magnitogorsk. It was a great opportunity to test their strength before the start of the playoffs. The match began cautiously, with the opponents watching each other, and the score was only opened closer to the middle of the first period. But it was this goal that instilled confidence in the Politekh players, after which four unanswered goals flew into the guests’ net, and the spectators in the stands of the “Jubilee” heard the classic song for such a moment — “Argentina-Jamaica.”In the second half of the match, the Bears relaxed the pressure and almost paid for it. The Magnitogorsk team scored three goals and came close to a rematch, but the puck, scored into an empty net, put an end to the game: 7-3.
As a result of the group stage, the Bears took first place in Group A and met with the “CAI” team from Kazan in the quarterfinals.
The quarterfinal match is the most difficult in the tournament, since the loser is eliminated, and the winner proceeds to fight for the medals. With these words, the coaching staff prepared the team for this battle: We need to forget the previous games, everything will be different today, this is a playoff, mistakes are not forgiven here, we must play as strictly as possible in defense first of all, and convert our chances in attack calmly.
The match from the first seconds made it clear that today it simply would be no one’s game, the abundance of power moves off the charts, and regular clashes only increased the resistance. There were few dangerous moments near the goals of both teams, but our guys managed to not only open the score first but even score twice, though the opponent responded with their counterattack, reducing the deficit by the first break. The intensity of the game continued until the final siren, but by that time the Bears had managed to score two more pucks, depriving the opponent of any chance of a final assault.
Valery Asratyan, who plays on our team, shared his feelings after the game: A real playoff victory. We did not fall for the opponents’ provocations, scored our own pucks, and won.
The opponent for the semifinal for the “Black Bears” became the team they had already faced in this tournament — “Steel Hearts.” This time, the tone of the meeting promised to be completely different, as a place in the final was at stake. The game started with a conceded goal already in the first minute, but thanks to the efforts of the fourth line, the team managed to equalize the score by the first break. The intrigue in the match remained until its middle, after which the players turned on full power and ultimately scored a total of ten pucks against MGTU’s goal, setting the final score at 10:3. The best player in this match was Daniil Larykin, who scored the decisive puck in the game.
The final match with the team “GUU” started with territorial advantage for our team. There were dangerous moments, but it was not possible to break through the guests’ goalkeeper in the first twenty minutes. The second period proved fatal for the Bears; the team put in maximum effort, but the puck desperately did not go into the opponent’s goal. For the Muscovites, on the contrary, everything worked out — three unanswered pucks and a flawless position in front of the ice rink before the third segment. In the final twenty minutes of the tournament, the Bears were instructed clearly by the coach: All onto the goal, break through the goalkeeper, and then it will be easier. When this was managed, it was already too late; even two quick pucks at the end of the match did not fix the situation, the disappointing 2:5 and the only defeat in the tournament for Politekh came precisely in the final game. For our team, this was not the first silver at the All-Russian final; in 2022, the hockey players also stopped one step short of gold.
According to the tournament results, Gleb Sedykh was recognized as the best forward, and the title of the most valuable player was awarded to Dmitry Repin, who completed his career in the Student League.
