A new model of marine economy is being formed in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area region. The key directions include “green” ports, marine wind energy, “marine pastures,” and carbon capture.

The Greater Bay Area region concentrates many world-class ports. Previously, ships with diesel generators heavily polluted the air along the coast. Today, the Yantian Port in Shenzhen has completely switched to shore power for all 20 berths. In 2025, the annual volume of shore power supply in Guangdong province exceeded 70 million kWh, which is equivalent to a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 47,700 tons. Shore power has become a key factor in the “green” transformation of ports.

In the energy sector in the Greater Bay Area, offshore wind energy is rapidly developing, and a complementary system of “offshore wind energy + marine farms + energy storage + hydrogen production” is actively being created. In the Shantou area, a large offshore wind power plant and the “Fusi-1” platform are operating, which combines wind energy with deep-water fish farming. By February 2026, the installed capacity of offshore wind energy in Guangdong province reached 13.51 million kW — nearly one-third of China’s national total. More than 10 state demonstration zones of marine farms have been established.All this allowed the province to embark on a path of sustainable fish farming development.

In the area of emission reduction, large-scale work continues on the restoration of mangrove forests in Shenzhen, Zhuhai, and Xiamen. They not only serve as a habitat for migratory birds but also annually bind tens of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide.

In 2025, the first marine project for capturing, utilizing, and storing carbon dioxide was launched in the Chujiang River basin in China. It is expected that over 10 years, more than 1 million tons of carbon dioxide will be injected underground, and additional oil production will reach 200 thousand tons.

The development of the maritime economy is impossible without interregional coordination. When planning work for the “15th Five-Year Plan” period, Guangdong Province proposed a number of specific measures. Experts believe that in the future, cities in the region will be able to use their advantages, complementing each other, implement political innovations, and raise the industrial level to become a key driver of high-quality development of the national maritime economy.
