Berlin, May 4 /Xin Hua/ — Two people died and two others sustained serious injuries after a car drove into a crowd of people in an incident that occurred on Monday in the city of Leipzig in eastern Germany. This was reported by local media.

As the Leipziger Volkszeitung newspaper reported, the mayor of Leipzig, Burkhard Jung, said that two people died as a result of the incident. The suspected driver has been detained; there is currently no immediate threat to public safety.

Two of the injured were in critical condition and received emergency medical care at the scene of the incident, after which they were delivered to nearby hospitals, reported the head of the city fire service Axel Shu, specifying that a total of 20 people were injured.
