Moscow, May 4 /Xinhua/ — On the occasion of the celebration of Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War, a ceasefire will be declared on May 8 and 9. The Russian Ministry of Defense announced this on Monday.

“In accordance with the decision of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation V. V. Putin, a ceasefire is declared on May 8-9, 2026, in honor of the celebration of Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. It is assumed that the Ukrainian side will follow this example,” says the department’s statement.

“At the same time, attention was drawn to the statement made by the head of the Kyiv regime in Yerevan at the summit of the European Political Community, which contains threats of a strike on Moscow specifically on May 9. The armed forces of the Russian Federation will take all necessary measures to ensure the security of holiday events,” the Russian Ministry of Defense indicated.

The department noted that in the event of attempts by Ukraine to carry out its criminal plans aimed at disrupting the celebration of the 81st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Russian armed forces will deliver a retaliatory massive missile strike on the center of Kyiv.

“Russia, despite having the capability, for humanitarian reasons had previously refrained from such actions. We warn the civilian population of Kyiv and foreign diplomatic staff about the necessity of timely leaving the city,” the message states.
