Cape Town, May 4 /Sin Hua/ — The Ministry of Health of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) confirmed on Sunday evening that two people died from acute respiratory infection on a cruise liner in the Atlantic Ocean.
Both people boarded the polar cruise liner MV Hondius, belonging to the Dutch company Oceanwide Expeditions, which was sailing from Ushuaia at the south of Argentina to Cabo Verde.
According to earlier reports from the SME, the first registered case, a 70-year-old passenger, died on board the vessel, and his 69-year-old wife was evacuated to the UAE and later died in a hospital in Johannesburg.
A third person was hospitalized in the intensive care unit in Johannesburg and gave a positive result for the virus. It is not yet clear whether these cases are related.
“I can confirm that two people died from acute respiratory infection,” a representative of the Foster Moore Health Department told the Xin Hua agency.
“At this stage, no reports of new cases have been received,” said F. Moale, adding that “the final diagnosis” for the third case has not yet been made.
