Washington, May 3 /Sin Hua/ — Two American servicemen went missing near the town of Tan-Tan in southwestern Morocco after participating in annual international military exercises. This was reported on Sunday by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM).
“The investigation of the incident continues,” the command statement says. It is noted that a search and rescue operation is currently underway.
According to the US allied forces in Europe and Africa, the servicemen who went missing on May 2 participated in the exercise “African Lion” — AFRICOM’s largest annual joint exercises aimed at “strengthening operational interoperability” between the US military, NATO allies, and African partner countries.
“The US forces, Morocco, and other participants of the ‘African Lion’ exercises immediately began a coordinated search and rescue operation using ground, air, and naval means,” AFRICOM reported, adding that “additional information will be provided as it becomes available.”
The “African Lion – 2026” exercises are being conducted in Morocco, Ghana, Senegal, and Tunisia.
