Brussels, May 2 /Xinhua/ — The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) said on Saturday that it is working with the United States to understand Washington’s decision to withdraw troops from Germany amid a new surge of tension between the US and Germany due to the crisis in the Middle East.

This step followed after US President Donald Trump criticized Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany Angela Merkel for his statement that Iran “humiliates” Washington in negotiations to end the war in the Middle East.

On May 1, the Pentagon announced that it plans to withdraw about 5,000 American military personnel from Germany.

NATO official Allison Hart stated on the social network X that the alliance “is working with the USA to sort out the details and decisions regarding the deployment of troops in Germany.”

A. Hart stated that this adjustment of emphasis highlights Europe’s necessity to continue increasing defense investments and to take on a larger share of responsibility for overall security. She added that allies have already agreed to allocate 5% of their GDP.

According to her, NATO remains confident in its ability to ensure deterrence and defense as the alliance advances toward what an official representative called a “stronger Europe in a stronger NATO.” –0–
