Jerusalem, May 2 /Sin Hua/ — Two participants of the “Global Sumud Fleet,” an international humanitarian convoy that was intercepted by Israeli naval forces in the Mediterranean Sea en route to the Gaza Strip, were delivered to Israel and handed over to law enforcement authorities for interrogation. This was stated in a statement by the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Israeli Navy detained a flotilla in international waters on the evening of April 29, and 175 of its participants were disembarked on the shore of the Greek island of Crete on May 1 with the assistance of the Greek government.

According to the statement from the Israeli side, two individuals who were not released are Saif Abu Keshek, presumably one of the leaders of the Palestinian National Conference Abroad /PCPA/, and Tyago Avil, who collaborates with the PCPA and is suspected of illegal activities.

PCPA, one of the main organizers of recent flotillas whose goal is to break through the Israeli “security corridor” around Gaza, has been sanctioned by the United States, claiming that this organization secretly operates on behalf of the Hamas movement.

The Israeli Foreign Ministry noted that visits by representatives of consular offices of the respective countries accredited in Israel will be organized for the two persons who remain in custody. S. Abu Keshek holds Spanish and Swedish citizenship, while T. Avila is a Brazilian citizen.

The “Global Fleet of Sumud,” consisting of dozens of vessels, departed from Barcelona in April and expanded its composition during a stop in Italy to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip and challenge the prolonged Israeli blockade of this territory.

Israel stated that the flotilla was intercepted with the aim of enforcing, as it called it, the lawful maritime blockade of Gaza. The Israeli operation provoked condemnation from a number of countries, characterizing these actions as an “attack”.
