Washington, April 2 /Xinhua/ — The United States has lifted sanctions on the acting President of Venezuela, Delcy Rodriguez. The announcement was published on Wednesday on the U.S. Department of the Treasury website.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) of the Treasury Department announced that D. Rodriguez has been removed from the sanctions list. No other details of this decision are provided.

D. Rodriguez on her X social media page called the lifting of restrictions a positive step towards normalization and strengthening of bilateral relations. She expressed hope that other sanctions against Venezuela would also be lifted to support economic development and cooperation.

Previously, D. Rodrígez was vice-president under President Nicolás Maduro. In 2018, the USA included her in the sanctions list as part of measures against the Venezuelan authorities.

On January 3, the US armed forces conducted a large-scale operation in Venezuela, detaining N. Maduro and his wife, who were then placed under guard in New York. Subsequently, D. Rodriguez began performing the duties of the president, and since then Washington has maintained contacts with her administration.

Relations between the USA and Venezuela have long been strained. In recent months, the USA has eased some restrictions, particularly in the energy sector. Venezuela possesses one of the largest proven oil reserves in the world and remains an important player in the global energy market.

On Monday, the U.S. Embassy in Caracas resumed operations after a seven-year hiatus. –0–
