Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov inspected the infrastructure and scientific-technological developments of the Saint Petersburg Mining University of Empress Catherine II
Mountain University is one of six leading universities that has entered a pilot project for transitioning to a new model of higher education. Already in 2023, it has fully transferred all its educational programs to new training standards. Today, it educates more than 10 thousand students, including foreigners from 70 countries around the world.
“It is necessary to give due credit to the rector, who did not just superficially wound the historical heritage in its ideal form, but also created such incredible conditions for continuing the work that was started here by Catherine II. The number of industrial partners is impressive. This is practically the entire country! It is interesting that the university also presents the best global practice. Major international companies have presented technologies here so that we can push off from the best international examples on our way to technological leadership and not close in on ourselves,” noted Dmitry Chernishenko.
He also emphasized that a unique system of education, upbringing, and practice has been created at the university on equipment using modern advanced technologies, including augmented reality, artificial intelligence, and modeling.
“Gorny was accidentally chosen as the site where an experiment on a new education model is being conducted. It is a great honor that the Gorny quality mark will stand on a model scaled to the entire country. Many thanks to the rector and the teaching staff. Students are lucky, employers even more so, because such trained specialists with a higher mark of quality in engineering education will be available to them in the labor market,” added the vice-premier.
Work of the university with industrial partners, which number more than 400 at the university, was demonstrated by the example of the BelAZ educational and scientific complex of laboratories. From the Mining one it is possible to control robotic technology in real-time, in particular loaders and dump trucks, which are located a thousand kilometers from Saint Petersburg. Among other things, programs are implemented here for the development and management of unmanned mining technology. Thanks to this cooperation, students can gain production experience and consolidate skills without interrupting the educational process on the university campus.
“The Mining University not only maintains a high standard but also sets trends for the entire higher education system, rightly becoming one of the first platforms for testing a new model of higher education. A logical continuation of the university’s development was the recent Presidential decree, which designated the Mining University as the national center for personnel and scientific support of the mineral resources sector.”The corps of mining engineers, relying on accumulated experience, will provide scientific and methodological support for the development and implementation of educational programs throughout the country,” said the head of the Ministry of Education and Science Valery Falkov.
At the International Centre of Competence in Mining Education under the auspices of UNESCO, the guests were given a detailed account of the university’s work with partners from 80 countries worldwide. Here, an international standard for the training of engineers in the mining industry has been developed.
Dmitry Chernyshenko and Valery Falkov were also presented with a model of an ultra-deep well. The university is preparing for its drilling in the Timan-Pechora oil and gas province with a design depth of 8 thousand meters. A program for the deep study of the genesis of typical Earth structures has been developed at the Mining University, and a National Research Center for Deep Metageology has been established.
The rector of the university Vladimir Litvinenko noted that the foundation of this scientific direction is a 60-year experience of fieldwork by university scientists in Antarctica, the discovery of the Vostok lakes, and the successful operation of the educational and production drilling site “Sablino”.
At the center of competencies “SistEm Elektrik”, successfully import-substituting a Western line of equipment for power supply and industrial automation systems in the domestic market, developments in the field of intelligent decision support systems were presented. For example, diagnostics of power equipment and energy saving management.
The visit to the house of the Mount Sinai University Church of Venerable Macarius of Egypt, the patron saint of Russian miners, has been completed. Regular services are held here, and a collection point for humanitarian aid for SVO volunteers has been organized.
