Beijing, April 29 /Xinhua/ — The peak travel period around the May 1 holiday will last for eight days from April 29 to May 6. It is expected that during these days, 158 million passenger rail trips will be made in China, the state-owned corporation “China Railway” reported on Wednesday.
It is reported that during this period, an average of 12 thousand passenger trains will operate daily according to the schedule. According to forecasts, the busiest day will be May 1, when approximately 24 million passenger trips are expected, which is a record figure for one day during the holiday period.
According to the railway operator, the sharp increase in train trips is due to high demand for tourism, visiting relatives, and leisure activities.
As of 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 83.02 million tickets had been sold on the 12306 railway ticket booking platform for the May Day holiday period.
