Beijing, April 29 /Xinhua/ — Full respect for the existing social system and way of life in Taiwan will be demonstrated after peaceful reunification on the condition of guaranteeing state sovereignty, security, and development interests, said the official representative of the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of the PRC, Chen Binghua, on Wednesday.

At another press briefing, he was asked to comment on the results of a survey conducted in Taiwan, according to which 55.2% of respondents expressed the opinion that it is already extremely difficult for Taiwan to “maintain the status quo.”

The survey also showed that 67.4% of respondents are concerned about the possible loss of their usual way of life and rights in the event that the status quo in the Taiwan Strait is not preserved.

Similar survey results, noted Chen Binxue, testify to a growing number of Taiwanese compatriots who realize that the historical trend toward national reunification cannot be stopped.

“We are ready, on a common political basis characterized by adherence to the 1992 Consensus and opposition to ‘Taiwan independence,’ to hold broad and in-depth consultations with all political parties, groups, and people from all strata of Taiwan society on cross-strait relations and national reunification,” he said. -0-
