Saint Petersburg, April 2 /Sinhua/ — The role of logistics in ensuring Russian-Chinese trade and economic cooperation grows every year, and now the greatest attention requires the expansion of bilateral cooperation in this area. This opinion was expressed on Thursday by participants of the International Transport and Logistics Forum, which is being held in Saint Petersburg.

According to Deputy Minister of Transport of the Russian Federation Dmitry Zverev, the exchange of permits for road transport between the two countries increased nearly fourfold over 5 years, and transportation along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) increased 2.6 times. The official noted that the Russian authorities conduct daily monitoring of checkpoint congestion, ensuring most of the turnover between the two countries: “We can state that tremendous work has been done at the main checkpoint over the last 2 years, and there are no queues.”

As noted by the CEO of the “Russian Export Center” Veronika Nikishina, demand for Russian products in China is growing, and logistics must keep up with these changes. To accelerate deliveries, in her opinion, the two countries need to synchronize the development of border infrastructure, increase the capacity of border crossings and the nomenclature of goods, as well as fully transition to electronic document management, particularly in the transfer of veterinary and phytosanitary certificates.

The CEO of New New Shipping Line, Ke Zhin, said that over the past few years, the Northern Sea Route (NSR) has demonstrated its stability and safety. This year, the company is expanding the geography of its presence in Russia and starting cooperation with the port of Murmansk. “We have organized a joint Chinese-Russian enterprise and are engaged in the construction of ice-class vessels. Our goal is to establish year-round transportation along the NSR,” noted the Chinese businessman.

According to the deputy general director of the company “Russian Railways,” Irina Magnushevskaya, a historical maximum volume of rail freight traffic between Russia and China was reached in 2025 — more than 186 million tons. The company plans to increase the carrying capacity to 210 million tons, modernize the border crossings of Zabaykalsk, Grodekovo, and Kamyshovaya. Since 2024, paperless technologies have been used in Russian-Chinese transportation in test mode, and an agreement has been reached that this mode will become permanent.

The International Transport and Logistics Forum will be held for the first time in Saint Petersburg from April 1 to 3. According to the organizers, about 5 thousand people from more than 80 countries and territories will participate. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, the forum will be held regularly once every two years.
