London, April 2 /Xin Hua/ — US President Donald Trump threatened to stop arms supplies to Ukraine to force European allies to join the “coalition of the willing” to resume operations of the Hormuz Strait, the British Financial Times /FT/ newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing informed officials.
Last month, D. Trump demanded that NATO naval forces assist in restoring the operation of the strategic waterway after it had effectively been closed amid the escalation of the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
It is reported that several European countries have rejected this request, stating that such a step is impossible under the conditions of the ongoing conflict, while some officials claimed that this confrontation is “not a war.”
FT reported that after this, D. Trump threatened to suspend deliveries/weapons/ within the framework of the NATO initiative PURL /”List of priority needs of Ukraine”, financed by European countries.
It is also reported that, as of now, the NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, along with a group of countries including key alliance members — France, Germany, and the United Kingdom — published a statement on March 19 which says: “We express our readiness to contribute to the appropriate efforts to ensure the safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.”
The newspaper reported that one of the officials informed about the discussion code indicated that M. Ryutte insisted on adopting a joint statement after D. Trump threatened to withdraw from the initiative and reduce support for Ukraine. –0–
