Beijing, April 28 /Xinhua/ — In the first quarter of 2026, the trade turnover between the city of Yiwu (Zhejiang Province, East China) and the countries participating in the Belt and Road Initiative reached 147.4 billion yuan (about 21.49 billion dollars, US), increasing by 29.8 percent year-on-year, reported the Chinese daily newspaper “People’s Daily”.
According to the statistics of the local customs, in January-March the foreign trade turnover of the city of Yiwu, also known as the “world supermarket,” increased by 25% year-on-year to 209.37 billion yuan, with growth rates 10 percentage points higher than the growth rates of a similar indicator nationwide.
For the specified period, the export of the city of Yiwu amounted to 178.61 billion yuan, increasing by 21.3 percent on an annual basis, while imports surged by 52.2 percent to 30.76 billion yuan.
Currently, Yiwu maintains trade relations with more than 220 countries and regions worldwide. At the same time, ASEAN is one of Yiwu city’s main trading partners: during the reporting period, trade turnover between them increased by 68.3%. In the first three months, Yiwu city’s trade turnover with African countries reached 41 billion yuan, with an annual growth of 47.3%.
Among the main types of export goods, the export of electrical products from the city of Yiwu amounted to 67.56 billion yuan, an increase of 23.8%, while the export of auto parts and electric motorcycles grew by 65.1% and 2.2 times respectively.
With regard to imports, in the first three months of the current year, the import of consumer goods into the city of Yi increased by 41.5 percent year-on-year. A zero-tariff policy allowed an increase in imports to Yi from African countries by 92.6 percent in January-March, and in the first quarter, imports of this city from ASEAN countries grew 2.3 times compared to the previous year. -0-
