UN, April 26 /Xinhua/ — UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was deeply concerned about reports of attacks in Mali’s territory and strongly condemned the acts of violence, said the official representative of the UN chief, Stéphane Dujarric, on Saturday.

A. Guterres expressed solidarity with the Malaysian people, emphasizing the necessity of protecting the civilian population and civilian infrastructure, according to a statement by S. Dujarric.

“The Secretary-General calls for coordinated international support in the fight against the growing threat of violent extremism and terrorism in the Sahel and to meet urgent humanitarian needs. He again confirms his call for reliable coordination and cooperation in the field of security throughout the region,” the statement notes.

The government of Mali stated on Saturday evening that armed terrorist groups had earlier in the day carried out coordinated attacks on several cities in the country, resulting in 16 people being injured.

Malaysian defense and security forces launched retaliatory strikes against the attackers, killed terrorists, and foiled the attackers’ plans.
