Saint Petersburg, April 24 /Sinyua/ — The keel-laying ceremony of the 16th Project 12700 minesweeper “Alexandrite” took place on Friday at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipbuilding Plant in the Russian city of Saint Petersburg, the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Russia reported.

The ship was named “Dmitry Glukhov” in honor of the commander of the 1st division of patrol boats of the Black Sea Fleet, who was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union during the Second World War.

The minesweepers of project 12700 are designed for searching and destroying mines in the waters of naval bases. During their construction, a technology for manufacturing the hull from monolithic fiberglass, made by the vacuum infusion method, is used.

Nine ships of the “Alexandrite” project are no longer in service with the RF Navy, while another seven are at the shipyard at various stages of readiness. In Russia, minesweepers of the 12700 project are in service with the Baltic, Black Sea, Pacific Ocean, and Northern fleets.
