During a working visit to the Republic of Kazakhstan on April 22, Deputy Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation Alexey Overchuk took part in the work of the regional ecological summit – 2026 “A Common Vision for a Sustainable Future,” and also, together with the Deputy Prime Minister – Minister of National Economy of the Republic of Kazakhstan Serik Zhumangarin, held a meeting of the co-chairs of the Intergovernmental Commission on Cooperation between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan.
At the meeting of the co-chairs of the IPC, current issues of bilateral interaction, representing mutual interest for Russia and Kazakhstan, were considered; promising directions for the further development of cooperation in key sectors of the economy were identified, including the transport and logistics sector, industrial cooperation, agriculture, tourism, high technologies, and the humanitarian agenda.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized that Russia and Kazakhstan are key trading partners. By the end of 2025, mutual trade turnover reached 28.7 billion dollars, with Russia occupying the second place among Kazakhstan’s foreign trade partners.
The co-chairs discussed issues of strengthening transport connectivity and developing international transport corridors, discussing joint measures to remove administrative barriers and create favorable conditions for carriers on the eastern route of the international transport corridor “North-South.”
The issue of a comprehensive approach to the use of the transport and water potential of the region was addressed separately. From this point of view, the development of energy and transport infrastructure on the Irtysh River was also discussed.
It was noted that Kazakhstan is among the most popular foreign destinations for Russian tourists. In 2025, the mutual tourist flow amounted to 4.9 million trips: more than 2.1 million trips from Kazakhstan to Russia and 2.8 million from Russia to Kazakhstan. The Deputy Prime Minister proposed to activate work on the development of tourist infrastructure in the area of Mount Belukha.
Humanitarian cooperation was allocated as a key element in strengthening good-neighborly relations. Alexey Overchuk recalled that last year, the Days of Kazakh Culture were held in Russia, during which achievements of modern Kazakh culture were presented — from theater and music to cinema and visual arts. Continuing this practice, he noted, “Tomorrow on the stage of the State Opera and Ballet Theater ‘Astana Opera’ there will be a solemn ceremony for the opening of the Days of Russian Culture in Kazakhstan.”
The Deputy Prime Minister spoke about the start of the work of the Secretariat of the International Organization for the Russian Language. “From April 1 in the city of Sochi, on the federal territory ‘Sirius,’ the Secretariat of the International Organization for the Russian Language, established by Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, began to operate,” he said, emphasizing that the organization was created on the initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan K.-Zh. Tokayev, which clearly reflects the attitude towards the Russian language in Kazakhstan.
The co-chairmen also discussed issues of cooperation in the information and communication sphere and the digital economy.
As a significant element of Russian-Kazakhstani interaction, interregional and cross-border cooperation between the subjects of the Russian Federation and the regions of Kazakhstan was highlighted. Over the past year, more than fifty events were held with the participation of representatives of regional authorities of the two countries, about 40 business missions were conducted. The next annual forum of interregional cooperation between Russia and Kazakhstan is planned for the autumn and will take place in Omsk.
The parties confirmed their readiness to continue constructive dialogue on all areas of interaction between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Kazakhstan.
