Beijing, April 22 /Xinhua/ — As of the end of 2025, the total installed capacity of nuclear power plants in China exceeded 120 million kW, allowing the country to take first place in the world. This was reported by the chairman of the Chinese Nuclear Society, Wan Shoujun.
As reported by Wan Shouzhun at the opening ceremony of the China International Atomic Industry EXPO 2026 on Wednesday, by the end of last year there were a total of 112 nuclear power units in China that were either operational, under construction, or had received permission for construction.
China continues to adhere to the course of active, safe, and orderly development of nuclear energy, said Wan Shoujun, adding that “controlled thermonuclear synthesis” and “coastal nuclear energy” were included among the country’s most important projects for the period of implementation of the 15th five-year plan (2026-2030).
Van Shoutsun noted the increasingly significant role of atomic energy in ensuring energy security and promoting “green” development against the backdrop of the acceleration of the global energy transformation.
According to him, in recent years China’s atomic industry has embarked on a path of rapid and high-quality development, strengthening its potential in the field of innovations in nuclear technology, including technologies of third and fourth generation atomic energy, small modular reactors, and advanced nuclear fuel cycles.
The four-day EXPO in Beijing attracted participation from nearly 300 domestic and international enterprises and organizations. In addition to demonstrating a wide range of technological equipment, the event included a series of high-level academic forums, technical exchange meetings, presentations of new products, and workshops on the popularization of scientific knowledge.
“Being an important platform for demonstrating global achievements in the field of nuclear science and deepening international cooperation, EXPO this year, as expected, will contribute to the further development of cooperation between the core circles of the domestic and international atomic industry,” added the chairman of the Chinese Nuclear Society. -0-
