As a result of the shelling to which the patrol was subjectedUN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), one French peacekeeper was killed and three other military personnel of the mission were wounded. The UN reminds that an attack on ‘blue helmets’ may be classified as a war crime.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning when peacekeepers were carrying out mine clearance work on the road to restore communication with isolated UN positions.
UN Secretary-GeneralAntónio GuterresHe strongly condemned the attack. In a statement published by his press service, it is noted that, presumably, the responsibility for the incident does not lie with the militants of Hezbollah.
“This is already the third incident in recent weeks that has led to the death of UN peacekeepers, and it occurred despite the declared ten-day ceasefire starting April 16. All parties must observe the ceasefire regime and stop hostilities,” the statement says. “The Secretary-General again calls on all parties to fulfill their obligations in accordance with international law and to ensure the safety of UN personnel, as well as the inviolability of the Organization’s property.”According to Guterres, attacks on peacekeepers can be qualified as war crimes and must be stopped.
The injured peacekeepers were taken to the hospital. The UN chief expressed condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased peacekeeper and wished the wounded a speedy and full recovery.
He also expressed his “deepest gratitude to all women and men serving in the ranks of UNDOF.” Antonio Guterres reminded of the importance of ensuring peace and security and freedom of movement.
The United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon were established by the Security Council in 1978 to monitor the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the south of the country and have since played an important role in ensuring security in this area.
The “Blue Helmets” are also authorized to monitor the implementation of Resolution 1701, which ended the hostilities between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants in 2006.
