Two student teams from the Faculty of Environmental Engineering and Urban Management of the Saint Petersburg State Architectural and Civil Engineering University demonstrated a high level of training in the field of information security at the competitionMIA_CTF,organized by the St. Petersburg University of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia together with the Association of Heads of Information Security Services (ARSIB).
The event brought together more than 100 teams from leading technical universities and secondary vocational educational institutions of the country. Over eight hours, participants had to cope with various cybersecurity tasks: from decoding messages and searching for errors in programs to investigating digital traces and discovering secrets hidden inside ordinary files.
The SPBGASU teams, prepared within the framework of our university’s student project on digital education Code.ak, confirmed the high status of the university as a competence center not only in construction and architecture, but also in modern digital technologies. The first team consists of students from the Faculty of Engineering Ecology and Urban Economy (FIEiGH), specializing in “Information Systems and Technologies”.Andrey Kornyushin, Kirill Fershtadt, Denis Kuznetsov, Rostislav Koverda(fourth course) andMaksim Suvalko(second year) solved 18 problems, scoring6376 points. This result allowed students to take an honorary10th placein total, a credit (sixthamong higher educational institutions).
The university’s second team, consisting of FIÉGX studentsVladimira Bulykina(specialization “Applied Informatics”, second year),Anastasia Ryazanova(direction “Applied Mathematics and Computer Science”, second year) andKirill Astashov(“Applied Mathematics and Computer Science”, first year),successfully hacked 10 tasks, earning1394 points, and was fixed on38th positionAmong hundreds of participants.
The participation of these two teams allowed SPbGASU to confirm its status by entering the six strongest universities in the country and becoming one of the leaders among educational institutions in St. Petersburg. Such high positions in a competition involving departmental and technical universities that train specialists directly in the field of computer security testify to the growth in the quality of practical training of cybersecurity specialists at the Department of Information Technology and Mathematical Modeling of SPbGASU.
Students demonstrated not only deep technical knowledge but also the ability to work as a team under conditions of strict time constraints and high pressure: in cases where many teams successfully solved a particular task, the number of points awarded for that task was reduced in order to increase the value of solving more complex tasks, which only a few managed to handle.
Our university is increasingly becoming a prize-winner at authoritative IT forums. In addition to the main training program, a significant role in this is played by the student project Code.ak, where the latest tech stacks (sets of technologies for creating applications) in programming are studied. The information that can be obtained within this project helps to reveal the potential of students as programmers – young specialists striving to work in the fields of development, testing, and computer security. His main task is to educate and engage students to participate in IT competitions and in the development of real projects, creating opportunities to enhance the developer’s portfolio and financial incentives for the student-developed product. The project contributes to narrowing the gap between the IT market and universities.
We congratulate our participants on an excellent result and wish for new victories!
