In the Krasnodar Territory, the federal highway M-4 “Don” will undergo reconstruction by the state company “Avtodor” over the distance from the 1441st to the 1503rd kilometer. This section runs along the Black Sea coast between Gelendzhik and Dzhubga. “Glavgosexpertiza of Russia” has issued positive conclusions for the first three stages of work within the boundaries of three separate reconstruction sections. This was reported by Deputy Prime Minister Marat Khusnullin.

“The South of Russia is rightly considered the granary of the country and its main resort area. Here, the load on roads grows every year, especially during the vacation season. Therefore, among the priority tasks for developing the southern regions, we highlight strengthening the road framework, expanding capacity, and diverting transit from populated areas. Special attention is given to improving the transportation situation on the Black Sea coast. Thus, by order of the President, a project will be implemented to ensure seamless movement between Gelendzhik and Dzhubga. The total length of the updated section of the M-4 ‘Don’ will be about 60 km. Of these, 24 km will be the reconstruction to a four-lane road, and 33.9 km will be new construction of two-lane bypasses of settlements. The ‘Glavgosexpertiza Russia’ has issued positive conclusions on the first three stages of work. The updated route will significantly increase the comfort and safety of trips for citizens,” said Marat Khusnullin.

The project is divided into six stages. The first three stages, for which positive conclusions have been obtained, include the construction of a bypass around the village of Bzhid and the reconstruction of approximately 15 km of existing road sections. The planned route segments are located in the Tuapsinsky District and in the city-resort of Gelendzhik. Work will be carried out here from km 1441 to 1449, from km 1460 to 1465, and from km 1478 to km 1484.5.

“The M-4 ‘Don’ is one of the most important federal highways in the country, providing a connection between the central regions of Russia and the Black Sea coast. The southern sections of the highway experience especially high traffic during the resort season. Therefore, the reconstruction of the stretch from Dzhubga to Gelendzhik is fundamentally important both for the residents of the coastal settlements and for motorists transiting to the Black Sea resorts. On the approved sections totaling about 15 km, the plan includes widening the existing two-lane road and constructing a 2.8 km bypass around the village of Bzhid. This will allow transit traffic to be diverted outside the populated area in the future, reduce the load on the local road network, and improve driving conditions,” noted Vyacheslav Petushenko, chairman of the board of the state company Avtodor.

During the road reconstruction, a one-sided widening of the roadway is planned with the new road axis shifted to the shoulder. This solution allows preserving part of the earth bed and completing the road works as efficiently as possible. Additionally, engineers will straighten all sharp turns: the curve radii will be increased to the standard 600 meters. This will not only improve traffic safety but also allow drivers to confidently accelerate on difficult sections.

“The key goal of the project is to increase the number of lanes from two to four and to redesign the main highway route to bypass all populated areas. This will allow the segregation of freight traffic into separate flows, relieve the heavy traffic on the popular resort route, and enhance its appeal for car tourists,” said Igor Manylov, head of the Russian State Expertise.

As part of the M-4 “Don” reconstruction project, new bridges will be built and existing crossings will be expanded to four lanes. The longest of the new structures will be the overpass on the bypass of the village of Bzhid – its length is 212 m, with support heights up to 30 m.

Engineering protection and slope stabilization are also provided. On floodplain and waterlogged areas, the road slopes will be protected using monolithic concrete and mesh gabion structures, which will eliminate the risk of erosion and deformation.
