The Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant is starting the implementation of the modernized TCS NAMI active safety system in diesel and gasoline versions of the new model range vehicles equipped with a six-speed manual transmission.
The new solution represents a further evolution of the ABS technology already used by NAMI and expands the potential of the active safety complex of UAZ vehicles. This development, in addition to the anti-lock braking function, is responsible for activating hill-start assist systems, emergency braking, traction control, as well as the so-called “electronic differential lock.”
“It is especially important for us that electronic safety systems are as effective as possible not only on asphalt but also in the real operating conditions of UAZ vehicles. The new TCS NAMI underwent a full range of tests on various types of road surfaces, including dirt roads, slippery surfaces, ascents, descents, and off-road. The test results clearly demonstrated that this solution improves the stability, handling, and safety of our models in challenging road situations,” said the Director of Research and Development for the Sollers Group. Mikhail Guryanov.
The TCS system is designed to enhance vehicle control when starting to move, accelerating, and driving on surfaces with varying coefficients of grip. In the event of one or more wheels slipping, the electronics redistribute the traction force and help maintain the vehicle’s stability. The hill start assist function makes it easier to start on an incline by preventing rollback, and the emergency braking assist system helps use braking force more effectively in critical situations.
“FSUE ‘NAMI’ continues the development of the Russian ABS/ESP system. Russian engineers are developing control algorithms, software, conducting calibration work at the NAMI Testing Center on vehicles, and also, together with colleagues from UAZ, are testing the ABS/ESP system under various road conditions,” noted the Executive Director for Information and Intelligent Systems at FSUE ‘NAMI’. Denis Endachev.
The implementation of TCS by NAMI will be the next stage in the development of active safety for UAZ vehicles of the new model range. The solution is aimed at increasing driver confidence when operating the vehicle both in urban conditions and off paved roads.
UAZ vehicles are traditionally used under increased loads — in rough and rural terrain, dirt roads, expeditions, commercial and official service. Therefore, expanding the functionality of the braking system is especially important for the brand’s customers who value reliability, off-road capability, and safety in challenging road conditions.
For reference
The traction control system (TCS) works together with the anti-lock braking system. When slippage is detected, the system can automatically brake the slipping wheel and help redistribute traction, providing more confident vehicle movement on slippery, loose, or uneven surfaces.
