November 2, 2026 Humanitarian Aid
The UN World Food Programme (WFP) is providing emergency aid to more than 400 people who arrived in Kyiv after evacuating from the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky during a temporary local ceasefire.
On October 31st, many of them were admitted to medical institutions: people had been in the combat zone for a long time, experiencing an acute shortage of food and medicine.
The UN welcomed the ceasefire agreements and called for ensuring permanent and safe humanitarian access to civilians in need, wherever they may be.
In cooperation with its local partner, the Iskra Dobra organization, WFP provided evacuees with hot meals immediately upon arrival and will continue to provide them for at least two weeks. New groups of evacuees are expected to arrive, and WFP is ready to scale up assistance as needed. Funding for this emergency food support is provided by the United States.
The ceasefire, achieved with the assistance of the US First Lady Melania Trump, allowed for the creation of a short-term humanitarian pause for the civilians of Oleshky. The UN emphasized that people wishing to leave the conflict zone should be able to do so voluntarily and safely. The organization also expressed hope that this pause will be a step towards expanding humanitarian access on both sides of the front line.
“For people who have lived for months in fear, isolation, and need, this humanitarian pause gives something very simple yet incredibly important – a chance to be safe and receive the necessary aid,” said Luke Lindberg, Executive Director of WFP.
“We hope that this moment will open the way for permanent humanitarian access, through which aid can reach all civilians in need, wherever they may be,” he added.
The UNHCR has been closely monitoring the situation in Oleshky and had previously attempted to provide support to the city’s residents but did not receive the necessary access.
The evacuation was conducted under difficult conditions. From 2023 through September 2026, the runway recorded 134 incidents affecting both the agency itself and its partner organizations, with 57 of them occurring just this year.
These incidents affected aid distribution points, vehicles, warehouses, food supplies, and humanitarian personnel.
WFP continues to provide food and cash assistance to people throughout Ukraine. More than half a million people receive support monthly.
