Tatiana Golikova congratulated the National Medical Research Center of Otorhinolaryngology of the FMBA of Russia on its 90th anniversary
The National Medical Research Center of Otorhinolaryngology of the FMBA of Russia is the largest multi-disciplinary expert-level medical institution in Russia in the field of otorhinolaryngology, head and neck surgery. At the solemn ceremony commemorating the center’s 90th anniversary, Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova addressed the team.
“Already in 1991, you performed the first cochlear implant surgeries in our country – this was a real breakthrough that became the starting point for the development of high-tech assistance for people with severe hearing impairments. Now you perform 550 such operations annually. The scale of clinical work is constantly increasing. Medical care is provided to patients from all regions of the country – almost 17 thousand people per year. Over the past five years, the number of treated patients has increased more than three and a half times, and the volume of high-tech medical care – almost twice. Following your professional duty, you always come to help people among the first. Currently, your specialists are involved in working in the FMBA of Russia combined detachment in Mariupol, Energodar, in the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics, Zaporizhzhia region. You take care of our guys, thank you for that,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.
The center provides all types of high-tech assistance for adult and pediatric ENT pathology, audiology, maxillofacial and plastic surgery, dentistry, ENT oncology, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, occupational pathology, and therapy. The center performs over 21,000 surgical interventions annually, more than 85% of which are high-tech operations.
The head of the FMBA of Russia, Veronika Skvortsova, noted that in terms of competencies the center is unique in our country and one of the few in the world: “The FMBA of Russia Otorhinolaryngology Center is the first clinic in our country to unite a large number of medical disciplines based on topographic principles. Alongside otorhinolaryngology, it houses departments of eye microsurgery, maxillofacial surgery, complex reconstructive-plastic surgery, dentistry, neurosurgery, and vertebrology. The pride of the center is its pediatric division. Childhood is represented here in all aspects of multidisciplinarity. Another unique feature of the center is the absolute age continuity of medical care. A seamless closed cycle is ensured—from screening newborns, performing the most complex cochlear and brainstem implantation and subsequent auditory-verbal rehabilitation, to transferring the patient to the adult departments of the clinic.”
Since 2022, the center’s staff, together with the state fund “Defenders of the Fatherland,” have been actively working in the regions of Russia with participants and veterans of combat operations. Dispensary observation, examinations, treatment, and rehabilitation have been organized for participants of the Special Military Operation who have sustained acoustic trauma. The center’s audiologists address complex medical and social challenges in assisting patients with profound hearing impairments.
The most important area of the center’s work is maxillofacial and reconstructive plastic surgery aimed at maximum restoration in combat-related skull injuries.
Tatiana Golikova and Veronika Skvortsova presented the center’s team with the Pirogov Order for their significant contribution to the development of medical science and the implementation of innovative technologies in practical healthcare.
