UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the escalation of drone strikes carried out by the parties to the conflict in Sudan. A statement from the UN chief’s spokesperson says these attacks are causing catastrophic consequences for the civilian population.
Across the country, as well as in Abyei, hundreds of civilians have died, including women and children. Such attacks are violations of international humanitarian law. Guterres is deeply appalled by the attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, including medical facilities.
He called on the parties to the conflict not to strike civilian populations and critical infrastructure and to agree without delay on a ceasefire. This should be the first step toward ending the destructive conflict. The Secretary-General once again strongly urged the parties to participate in the mediation efforts in good faith.
The UN stands ready to support any efforts that will help achieve a sustainable political settlement that meets the aspirations of the people of Sudan.
