On October 21, the premiere of the documentary film “Odyssey of Elephants” took place in Beijing, which for the first time presented the story of the migration of Asian elephants from the southern part of Yunnan Province to the north and their subsequent return to the south, as well as the release into the wild of a rescued elephant named Abao.

The film was directed by Gu Yujin in collaboration with filmmakers from China, Canada, Singapore, and other countries. Over the course of three years, the crew repeatedly traveled to the tropical forests of Yunnan Province to capture the Chinese government’s comprehensive measures to protect Asian elephants. Through individual animal stories, the film reveals the broader theme of environmental conservation in China.

At the premiere screening, a representative of the China International Publishing Corporation (CIPC) noted that the film “Elephant Odyssey,” based on documentary footage, demonstrates China’s practical steps and achievements in building an ecological civilization. Co-production with foreign partners contributes to creating a platform for intercivilizational dialogue and mutual cultural enrichment, while the emotional response of viewers opens up opportunities to find effective ways to convey stories about China to an international audience. The immersive effect during viewing allows viewers from different countries to deeply connect with what is happening on screen.

In IMAX cinemas, viewers will be able to see additional footage of the film that fully conveys the grandeur of nature and the breathtaking scale of the elephant herd’s journey.

The film “Odyssey of Elephants” was created with the support of the Press Office of the State Council of the PRC and the State Forestry and Grassland Administration of the PRC (State Administration of National Parks). The executive producers of the film were the China International Publishing Group (CICG), the Propaganda Department of the Yunnan Provincial CPC Committee, and the China Film Co-Production Corporation (CFCC). Starting October 23, the film will be released nationwide in wide distribution.
