Top news of the day at the UN and worldwide: the ceasefire in Oleshky opens the way for humanitarian aid delivery, the UN Refugee Agency has announced the start of a winter fundraising campaign for conflict-affected countries, Volker Türk expressed deep concern over the closure of Novaya Gazeta, the IAEA received information that a staff member of the Zaporizhzhia NPP in Ukraine was killed as a result of a drone attack.

Ceasefire in Oleshky
UN emergency relief coordinator Tom Fletcher stated that every day of ceasefire in the Russian-occupied Ukrainian city of Oleshky is a hope for its residents. He emphasized that everyone who wants to leave should have the opportunity to do so. The ceasefire also opens the way for the delivery of humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric reported that two humanitarian vehicles were struck the day before—in the village of Belenkoye, Zaporizhzhia region, and in Sloviansk, Donetsk region. One woman died, and several others were injured.
Fundraising for victims of war-torn countries
Due to funding shortages and a sharp increase in energy prices, at least 9 million residents of four conflict-affected countries – Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon, and Afghanistan – require additional assistance to survive the upcoming winter. This was reported on Friday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), which announced the launch of its annual winter fundraising campaign. To partially offset the sharp budget cuts, UNHCR aims to raise at least $50 million – $3 million more than last year. The campaign targets individuals and business representatives.
The Closure of “Novaya Gazeta”
UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk expressed deep concern over today’s reports that “Novaya Gazeta” was forced to cease operations. According to him, this is another “devastating blow to the remaining independent media in the Russian Federation.” For many years, independent journalism in the country has faced increasing restrictions, Türk stated. He called on the Russian authorities to ensure the possibility of full and free discussions in society.
Death of a ZNPP employee
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has received information that a staff member of the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) in Ukraine was killed as a result of a drone attack. According to available data, he was a welder in the plant’s central repair workshop. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi stated that any attack on nuclear power plant personnel is absolutely unacceptable and violates the fundamental principles of nuclear safety during an armed conflict.
