The first documented case of human infection with the Shamonda virus, previously found only in animals, has been identified in France. This was reported on Thursday on the social network X by Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to available data, the patient had a weakened immune system, which made him more vulnerable to infection and severe disease progression.
“Unfortunately, this person has passed away,” wrote the head of the WHO. “I extend my sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.”
Shamonda virus primarily affects animals: cattle, sheep, goats, and horses. Scientists believe that the virus is transmitted between animals through bites of midges of the genus Culicoides – small insects similar to gnats.
For a complete understanding of the mechanisms of virus transmission, further research is necessary, Gebreyesus noted. The infected patient was in an area where the Shamonda virus was circulating among animals and where Culicoides midges were also found.
WHO is maintaining contact with French authorities who are gathering information to better understand the source of the patient’s infection, possible modes of virus transmission, and any potential risks to public health, added the head of WHO.
