Under the chairmanship of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, a meeting of the coordination committee for the implementation of the Decade of Science and Technology was held. The main topic was the organization of the 6th Congress of Young Scientists (CYS) in 2026.

The meeting was also attended by the co-chair of the coordination committee, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov, Minister of Science and Higher Education Valery Falkov, Minister of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media Maksut Shadaev, head of FMBA Russia Veronika Skvortsova, Advisor to the President of Russia Anton Kobyakov, Chairman of the Council of the Sirius Federal Territory, head of the Talant i Uspekh educational foundation Elena Shmelyova, and others.

Dmitry Chernyshenko listed significant events that have occurred in science since the last meeting of the coordination committee. Among them are the launch of the Siberian Ring Photon Source, the Council for Science and Education, the approval of the national Bioeconomy Development Strategy until 2050, and the start of pilot projects on AI in science.

“The Congress of Young Scientists is one of the main annual events of the Decade of Science and Technology, announced by President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. The event is part of the national project ‘Youth and Children.’ The business program of this year’s congress should be aligned with current initiatives and projects in the field of scientific and technological development. The key tasks were outlined by the head of state during the Council on Science and Education: increasing the demand for research and development results, engaging regions in supporting leading scientific and educational centers, ensuring equal access for scientists to advanced scientific infrastructure, especially sovereign AI models. I expect to see in the program’s structure the first results of work on the implementation of artificial intelligence technologies in scientific activities,” stated the Deputy Prime Minister.

He added that AI accelerates work and paves the way for fundamentally new results, including transforming the field of science. It is important that young scientists choose our sovereign models. Recently, 21 pilot projects for the implementation of AI in science were launched at the Innopolis site.

“The KMU platform is traditionally a space for sharing experiences, generating new ideas; a place where young scientists can find new opportunities for their development; a feedback tool from the scientific community on our decisions; the most significant event in the field of science, where scientists, business, and the government come together annually. It is important to preserve these features of the congress,” emphasized the Deputy Prime Minister.

Dmitry Chernyshenko also emphasized the importance of demonstrating the progress of the implementation of national projects on technological leadership and the results of new world-class scientific centers at the congress exhibition.

“The Russian Academy of Sciences actively participates every year in the preparation and conduct of the Congress of Young Scientists. Traditionally, we have our own exhibition stand, members of the RAS hold meetings and lectures, communicate with youth, share experience, and find points of contact. Only in 2025, about 50 events took place at the congress with our direct involvement. At the upcoming congress, we also plan a wide educational program,” said Gennady Krasnikov.

The fifth year of the Decade of Science and Technology is a significant milestone that allows us to assess the achievements of domestic science and determine the priorities for its development, noted the head of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Valery Falkov.

“Mega-science class facilities are currently being created and modernized, student campuses are being built, youth laboratories are being opened, and the instrument base of our universities and academic institutes is being updated. All this, among other things, creates conditions for young people to realize themselves in science,” said Valery Falkov.

According to Rosstat, the proportion of young scientists in Russia continues to grow. Researchers under the age of 39 make up 43% of the total number of Russian scientists – that is almost 147 thousand people.

“It is especially important that we have managed to reverse the longstanding trend of a decline in the number of the youngest researchers under 30 years old: their share increased from 15.7% in 2021 to 17% in 2025. And just in the last year, their share grew by another 0.6%. This indicates that the systematic work to support young scientists is yielding results,” the minister added.

“To date, more than 5,000 applications have been received to participate in the VI Congress of Young Scientists, of which about 400 are from foreign citizens. It can be confidently stated that the Congress of Young Scientists has taken a significant place in the calendar of the largest technology companies, leading scientific organizations, representatives of departments and business circles, as well as our foreign partners. The Congress has become an annual gathering point where science meets the practical demands of the state and business for scientific solutions and technologies. Last year’s congress was the largest in its entire history, and this year it will serve as a platform for deepening international cooperation and forming long-term project partnerships with foreign scientific organizations,” said Anton Kobyakov, Advisor to the President of Russia and head of the interdepartmental working group for the preparation and conduct of the Congress of Young Scientists and related satellite events.

This year, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam was granted the status of guest of honor at the congress.
