UN, April 19 /Xinhua/ — UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Saturday strongly condemned the attack, in which a French peacekeeper serving in the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was killed, and three others were wounded earlier on the same day. This was announced by the official representative of the Secretary-General, Stéphane Dujarric.

“Attacks on peacekeepers must stop. They are serious violations of international humanitarian law and Security Council resolution 1701, and can be classified as war crimes,” the statement published by S. Dujarric says.

A. Guterres once again called on all parties to comply with their obligations under international law, ensure the safety of UN personnel and the inviolability of UN property and premises, as well as to respect the freedom of movement of UNTSO.

The statement notes that “all attacks on peacekeepers must be promptly investigated, and those responsible must be held accountable.”

According to the initial assessment by the UNIFIL, peacekeepers came under fire from non-state actors, presumed to be “Hezbollah,” while inspecting the site in the UNIFIL operational zone, where, according to available data, improvised explosive devices were found.

This is the third incident in recent weeks that led to the death of UN peacekeepers, despite the 10-day ceasefire announced on April 16.

S. Dužarrik, on behalf of the Secretary-General, called on all parties to observe the ceasefire and stop the fire.

“The Secretary-General expressed his deepest condolences to the family, close ones, and colleagues of the fallen peacekeeper, as well as to the government and people of the French Republic. He wishes a full and speedy recovery to the injured peacekeepers,” the statement says.
