On the banks of the Yellow River in the rare earth industry high-tech zone “Situ Gaoxin” in the city of Baotou, Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, operates the people’s rescue team “Wang San”, which is engaged in rescuing people who have fallen into the water and are drowning.
53-year-old Wan San is the commander of a rescue team. His real name is Wan Jinqin. He lives in the village of Huajiangyinzi, located in close proximity to the Yellow River. He grew up on the banks of this river, and just after turning 20, he started making a living by fishing and operating a speedboat on the Yellow River. Whenever someone fell into the water or began to drown, he was the first to rush to help. According to Wan Jinqin, despite the difficult hydrological conditions on the Yellow River, his determination to save human lives has never weakened.
In 2012, he single-handedly saved a drowning person and then sat on the shore for a long time from exhaustion before regaining consciousness. “When a person falls into the Yellow River, the situation is extremely dangerous; you can’t waste a minute,” says Wang Jinqing. According to him, the capabilities of a single rescuer are limited, and in an emergency situation, action must be taken immediately. It was then that he had the idea to create a rescue team.
In April 2013, he, together with several fellow villagers, created the rescue squad “Wan San” on the Yellow River. Over the years, the rescuers have come to the aid of people who found themselves in the water hundreds of times. The squad’s size has grown from a few people to the current 16. It includes both young members just over 30 years old and experienced fishermen aged over 70.
Thanks to the support of government bodies, the rescue equipment of Wang Jingqin and his team members is constantly updated and improved. On the banks of the Yellow River, points equipped with professional rescue tools, including life rings and ropes, have been set up, significantly increasing the effectiveness of water rescue operations.
Wan Jingqin says that in recent years, with the development of the local culture and tourism industry, more and more tourists have been coming to the banks of the Yellow River. Regardless of heat or cold, wind or rain, the rescue team regularly patrols the waters and riverbanks, reminding tourists to observe safety measures and immediately coming to their aid in case of a dangerous situation. This work does not stop for a single day.
“Every time someone is saved, I feel immense joy. This joy becomes our driving force and motivates us to continue saving people,” says Wang Jingqing.
