Eight gold and two silver medals were won by schoolchildren representing Russia at the II International Ahmad Al-Fergani Physics Olympiad. The intellectual competition took place in Samarkand (Republic of Uzbekistan). Our country’s team participated in the Olympiad in person. Deputy Prime Minister of Russia Dmitry Chernyshenko and Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Sergey Kravtsov congratulated the students on their brilliant performance.

“Congratulations to the Russian schoolchildren on their remarkable success at the International Physics Olympiad! They won 10 medals, and now in 2026 our country has 101 awards. This is the result of the joint efforts of the students, mentors, and parents. Victories in STEM and precise sciences are especially valuable. We see that Russia is rich in talents who will ensure the country’s technological leadership – a national goal set by President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin. I wish each medalist to effectively apply their knowledge and boldly pursue new discoveries!” — stated Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko.

Gold medals were won by:

§ Maksim Zaleskiy (Lyceum “Second School” named after V.F. Ovchinnikov, Moscow);

§ Dmitry Strelnikov (Specialized Educational and Scientific Center of the Ural Federal University named after the first President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin, Yekaterinburg);

§ Yaroslav Tikhonyuk (Moscow State Educational Institution “Fifty-seventh School”);

§ Alexander Chumanov (Specialized Educational and Scientific Center of the Federal State Autonomous Educational Institution of Higher Education “Ural Federal University named after the First President of Russia B.N. Yeltsin”, Yekaterinburg);

§ Leonard Guranada (ANO “PhysTech Lyceum” named after P.L. Kapitsa, Moscow);

§ Arseniy Gasanenko (Private Educational Institution “International Blended Learning School”, Moscow);

§ Alexander Beley (ANO “Phystech Lyceum” named after P.L. Kapitsa, Moscow);

§ Ilya Androsov (Marshal V.I. Chuikov School in the Southeast, Moscow).

Based on the results of the competitions, Dmitry Strelnikov was recognized as the absolute winner of the theoretical round, Yaroslav Tikhonyuk as the absolute winner of the olympiad.

The silver medals were awarded to Ivan Ermolaev (School No. 2044 named after Hero of the Soviet Union A.M. Serebryakov, Moscow) and Savely Chechnyov (ANO “Phystech Lyceum” named after P.L. Kapitsa, Moscow).

“Fostering schoolchildren’s interest in science and engineering is one of the main priorities of state policy in the fields of education and technological development. And once again, Russian schoolchildren have demonstrated that the domestic physics school is one of the most advanced and best in the world, showing top-class performance in solving global-level problems. The brilliant result of the students at the international Olympiad is not just their personal success, it is an indicator of the development of the entire education system in the country. Behind every medal lies immense effort, patience, and self-belief. I am confident that for high school students, this experience will become a springboard into major scientific endeavors. I wish you not to stop at what you have achieved and to keep this thirst for knowledge throughout your life! We are proud of you!” said the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation, Sergey Kravtsov.

He specifically emphasized that the national team included winners and prize-winners of the final stage of the All-Russian Schoolchildren Olympiad – the country’s main intellectual competition, conducted by the Ministry of Education of Russia as part of the national project “Youth and Children”, and expressed special words of gratitude to the students’ coaches.

The team was led by Maksim Pokrovsky, a tutor of the educational-methodological laboratory for working with gifted children at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology, with Artem Pivovarchik, an additional education teacher at the “Center for Pedagogical Excellence,” serving as deputy head.

Teams from a total of 15 countries participated in the olympiad. During the experimental and theoretical rounds, participants completed tasks that covered the entire spectrum of classical and modern physics, testing both theoretical understanding and experimental skills.

For Russian schoolchildren, participation in the competition became a stage in preparing candidates for the Russian national team for the International Physics Olympiad.

The International Ahmad al-Fergani Physics Olympiad is a prestigious international competition aimed at identifying and supporting young talents in the field of physics. The intellectual contest was held for the first time in 2021, bringing together teams from 19 countries. Russian schoolchildren conquered four gold and one silver medal.
