At Library No. 210 — the A.T. Tvardovsky Cultural Center — a meeting of the book club “Circle of Reading” will take place. Participants will discuss Günter Grass’s novel “The Tin Drum.”
Literature teacher and researcher Viktor Khodenko will talk about the peculiarities and the philosophical-historical foundation of the work that brought the writer worldwide fame. The plot unfolds in Danzig and post-war Germany: Oskar Matzerath, who decided at the age of three to stop growing, observes the adult world, beats on a tin drum, and has a voice that shatters glass. His grotesque and unreliable memory reflects the rise of Nazism, post-war recovery, and the burden of guilt. The novel raises themes of memory and oblivion, guilt and responsibility, and escape from history.
It will also address the work of Günter Grass as a whole — the “Danzig Trilogy,” poetry, drama, connection with “Group 47,” magical realism, and the influence of “The Tin Drum” on German literature of the second half of the 20th century.
