Specialists have completed the restoration of the surviving fragments of the entrance gates of the Central Moscow Hippodrome — the pylons with equestrian sculptures. They are located at the beginning of the Begovaya Alley on the side of Leningradsky Prospect. The unique architectural monument of the late 19th century has been returned to its historical appearance. This was reported by Vladimir Efimov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Urban Planning Policy and Construction.
The pylons are massive pillars featuring sculptural compositions titled “The Dioscuri Taming Horses.” Currently, this architectural ensemble holds the status of a regional cultural heritage site.
“The restoration of the historic pylons was carried out as part of the comprehensive reconstruction of the Central Moscow Hippodrome. The work took place in several stages and with consideration of all requirements for the preservation of cultural heritage sites. It was preceded by scientific research that made it possible to recreate the original appearance of the architectural monument from the late 19th century. All residents and visitors of the city can see the restored pylons at the beginning of Begovaya Alley from the side of Leningradsky Prospekt,” noted Vladimir Efimov.
Pylons with equestrian sculptures, which were part of the entrance gates to the Central Moscow Hippodrome, were installed in 1899. The gates were dismantled in the 1960s, but the columns with figures of people and horses were preserved. Over time, the historical objects sustained damage, and some decorative elements were lost.
“As part of the restoration work, specialists dismantled the late layers of plaster from the stucco decoration, as well as from the pedestal with sculptures made of spelter. Then the pylons were treated with anti-salt solutions that prevent the destruction of the structures. After that, the damaged elements were restored, the brickwork was repaired and reinforced, and cracks were sealed using injection methods. Finally, the decorative design of the architectural composition was recreated. Modern high-strength materials were used for the finishing,” emphasized the head of the city’s Department of Civil Construction.
Earlier, Sergey Sobyanin announced the reopening of the Moscow Hippodrome after reconstruction.
The Central Moscow Hippodrome, founded in 1834, is the oldest in Russia and the first trotting racetrack in the world. It is located on the territory of the former Khodynka Field at 22 Begovaya Street. After a comprehensive reconstruction, the hippodrome has become a modern multifunctional public space.
