On September 24, at the entrance to the coffee bar “Leige” in the resort area of Shanhaityan in the city of Zhijiao, Ryan Norman (left) waves to friends together with his wife Zhang Lei.
Ryan Norman, a native of the US state of California, whom Chinese internet users affectionately call “Léi gé,” has been living in the city of Zìzhào in Shandong Province for 20 years. After marrying a Chinese woman, he became a “foreign son-in-law” here, and Zìzhào is his second home. Ryan creates short videos about the city’s everyday life and tells the stories of Shandong through truthful, vivid footage. Over more than three years, he has gathered over 5 million followers on various platforms.
Today, in addition to creating short videos, he also runs a coffee shop, a restaurant specializing in fried chicken dishes, and other establishments. Ryan admits that the opportunities opened up by China’s dynamic development and the warm atmosphere of everyday life consistently inspire him to move forward. He intends to continue living and working in Zhizhao, serving as an ambassador for friendly exchanges between the peoples of China and the United States.
