Beijing, October 13 /Xinhua/ — Chinese President Xi Jinping and President of Botswana, Duma Gideon Boko, announced on Tuesday during talks in Beijing the elevation of bilateral relations to comprehensive strategic cooperation and partnership.

Recalling that this year marks the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 60th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Botswana, Xi Jinping stated that the ruling parties of both countries should strengthen cooperation and deepen the exchange of experience in the field of state governance.

As Xi Jinping noted, China supports Botswana in choosing a path of development that corresponds to its national conditions. He called on the parties to further improve the mechanisms of trade and economic cooperation and to take advantage of the new opportunities arising from the comprehensive implementation of the zero-tariff customs regime introduced by China for the products of those African countries that have established diplomatic relations with the PRC.

China is ready to strengthen cooperation with Botswana in areas such as the digital economy, agriculture, and animal husbandry, as well as to implement the “smart education” project, noted Xi Jinping.

Speaking about the development of China-Botswana and China-Africa cooperation in the mining industry, the President of China noted that Africa’s resources belong to Africa itself, and this is the premise for cooperation.

According to him, China intends to share its own experience with African countries and assist them in developing mining industry development plans taking into account the national conditions of these states, and will also continue to encourage Chinese enterprises to transfer environmentally friendly technologies adapted to African conditions to the African side.

Xi Jinping assured that China will continue to promote the transformation of China-Africa cooperation in the mining industry towards increased added value and to consider accessible, sustainable, and innovative financing models.

Stating that Africa’s resources should not become a tool for geopolitical struggle, Xi Jinping declared that China gladly acknowledges the sincere contributions of all parties to Africa’s development and is ready to work with Africa to create more favorable conditions for the investment and commercial activities of enterprises.

D. G. Boko, for his part, stated that China has completely lifted all the population living below the poverty line out of poverty and has embarked on a path of successful development with Chinese characteristics, and according to the president, Botswana should deeply study and adopt this experience.

He stated that Botswana highly values its relations with the PRC and will firmly adhere to the One-China principle, opposing any schemes aimed at achieving “Taiwan independence” and any external interference in China’s internal affairs.

D. G. Boko emphasized that his country intends to strengthen the alignment of its development strategy with China and invites even more Chinese enterprises to invest and do business in Botswana.

The Botswanan leader added that his country expects to maintain close coordination and interaction with China, uphold multilateralism, strengthen the cohesion of developing countries, and promote unity and cooperation between Africa and China, so that the global governance system becomes even more inclusive and representative.

At the conclusion of the negotiations, the heads of the two states jointly witnessed the signing of a package of cooperation documents in areas such as the implementation of the Global Security Initiative, joint construction of the “Belt and Road”, environmentally clean mineral extraction, healthcare, and human resources.

During the state visit of D. G. Boko to China, the parties issued a joint statement on the establishment of comprehensive strategic cooperation and partnership relations between the People’s Republic of China and the Republic of Botswana.

Before the start of the negotiations, Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan held a welcome ceremony for D. G. Boko and his wife Kaone Boko at the Great Hall of the People. On Tuesday evening, Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan also hosted a welcome banquet in their honor.
