At the Moscow Zoo, subordinate to the capital’s Department of Culture, a baby of a rare Bolivian night monkey listed in the International Red Book was born. The baby was born back in May, and now he weighs over 300 grams.
“The baby was fed with a milk formula every two hours. Initially, he was given one milliliter of the formula, and then the volume was increased. At one and a half to two months, the intervals between feedings grew to 3.5 hours. A special pocket made of fur was sewn for the baby, in which he warmed himself and slept (a heater was additionally placed under the pocket). The baby could comfortably cling to this pocket and move along it as if on the parent’s back,” shared Svetlana Akulova, General Director of the Moscow Zoo.
At about three months old, the baby night monkey began to be introduced to complementary foods. He was given small amounts of banana, apple, pear, vegetables, egg, and insects.
Now the monkey has grown up and moved to a separate enclosure where her older sister — a two-year-old female named Aina — lives. Their enclosure is located outside the exhibition area.
Mother Anna, along with the male Buslai, live in another enclosure. Visitors to the zoo can see this pair together with their other one-year-old offspring in the “Night World” exhibit on the lower floor of the “Primates” pavilion. In the neighboring enclosure live the couple’s eldest son — the male Berdi with the female Bella. In 2019, the monkey Anna was transferred to the Moscow Zoo together with the male Buslai from the zoo in Riga.
The Bolivian night monkey, or miriquina, inhabits South America and is considered the largest of its kind. The average body length is about 34 centimeters, and the body weight is around 1.2 kilograms. The animal’s large brown eyes provide excellent night vision, allowing it to lead an active lifestyle at night. Additionally, these primates are known for their loud voice and can produce sounds resembling cat meows, jaguar roars, and dog barks.
Myrikins are monogamous — they form a family consisting of a male, a female, and offspring of various ages. Young primates can stay with their parents for two to three years, after which they leave and create their own families.
At the beginning of 2025, the Moscow Zoo set a world record for the number of animal species represented: at that time, it housed 1,253 species. By 2026, their number had approached 1,280. This result was made possible thanks to many years of work by zoologists, veterinarians, keepers, and other specialists. You can observe the zoo’s inhabitants at online broadcasts.
The program of events at the Moscow Zoo contributes to achieving the goals and objectives of the national project “Environmental well-being”. More details about Russia’s national projects and the contribution of the capital can be found at special page.
